On 11–13 April 2014 Afterall and Tate Film presented ‘“Magiciens de la Terre” Reconsidered’, a long weekend of screenings and discussions based on the Centre Pompidou’s original cinema programme for the ‘Magiciens’ exhibition.

This opening session, introduced by George Clark, reflected on the 1989 show and film programme. It included illustrated talks by Lucy Steeds, expanding on her core contribution to the recent book Making Art Global (Part 2): Magiciens de la Terre 1989 and Jean-Michel Bouhours, Curator of Modern Art at the Pompidou and formerly of the Cinema department, discussing the original film programme and setting it within its Pompidou context. This was followed by a panel discussion with Bouhours, Steeds and Mark Francis, co-curator of ‘Magiciens de la Terre’, chaired by Elvira Dyangani Ose, Curator International Art, Tate Modern.

Over the ensuing weekend, there were further screenings and debate, programmed in partnership with Tate Film. An audio recording of Anselm Franke’s talk at the fifth session ‘Magiciens Reconsidered 5: Artists at Work, Filming Magicians’ is available here.
