Richard Sommer, Barbara Fischer and Charles Stankievech
On Monday the 16th of January, Head of Central Saint Martins Jeremy Till will introduce a guest lecture by Richard Sommer and colleagues Barbara Fischer and Charles Stankievech of the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto.
Presented by the CSM Fine Art and Spatial Practices programmes, in collaboration with Afterall Research Centre, this event follows on from the ‘This is an Art School’ project at Tate Modern, a week of activity exploring the purpose of the art school.
Richard Sommer is Dean of the Daniels Faculty. Trained as an architect and urbanist, his professional and academic activity takes the complex physical geography, culture, technology, politics and historiography of the contemporary city as a starting point. This includes examining the transformation of monument making in societies aspiring towards democracy, with a particular focus on ‘America’; serving from 2005–10, as the O’Hare Chair of Design and Development; and as a Visiting American Scholar at the University of Ulster, Belfast. In this capacity, he worked with government agencies, academics, and other groups to develop proposals for the design of Northern Ireland’s cities and towns as they emerge from ‘The Troubles’.
Barbara Fischer is Director of the Visual Studies programme in Curatorial Studies at the Daniels Faculty and Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Art Museum at the University of Toronto. She has curated award-winning solo and group exhibitions in the area of contemporary art and its histories, including the internationally circulating retrospective exhibition General Idea Editions 1967–1995. She is the recipient of the 2008 Hnatyshyn Award for Curatorial Excellence in Contemporary Art.
Charles Stankievech is an artist and the Director of Visual Studies at the Daniels Faculty. He is co-Director with Anna-Sophie Springer of K. Verlag in Berlin, and a founding faculty member of the Yukon School of Visual Arts in Dawson City, Canada – a partnership with the indigenous sovereign nation of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in. His research has explored issues such as the notion of ‘fieldwork’ in the embedded landscape, the military industrial complex and the history of technology. Charles is a co-Editor of Afterall Journal.
