John Miller in conversation with Kim Colin: Mike Kelley’s Educational Complex (1995)

04 sep 2015
Book launch, Public talk
Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA, London.

Please join us for this lunchtime event that marks the launch of Afterall Books’ Mike Kelley: Educational Complex by John Miller. As part of the ‘Culture Now’ series at Institute of Contemporary Art, London, artist John Miller will be in conversation with designer Kim Colin to discuss Mike Kelley’s artwork Educational Complex (1995), an architectural model of every school Kelley attended.

A ‘complex’ can be an architectural configuration, a psychological syndrome or a political apparatus. In this book for our One Work series, Miller approaches Educational Complexthrough corresponding lines of enquiry, considering the representation of Kelley’s schools (and his childhood home) as architectural models; popular fantasies associated with false memory syndrome; and the liberal democratic premises underpinning education. A trained architect, Kim Colin headed the production of Mike Kelley’s Educational Complex.

John Miller, Professor of Professional Practice in the Department of Art History at Barnard College, is an artist and critic whose work has been exhibited internationally. He was Mike Kelley’s friend and colleague from 1978 until Kelley’s death in 2012.
