Regulations

Havana city map showing different exhibition venues of the Third Havana Bienal.

The Bienal de La Habana aims to consolidate a space open to art from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, as a way to foster its exchange, the understanding of its values and to contribute to its dissemination and universal recognition.

Art from these regions accepts the challenge of universalism and of the contemporary condition based on cultures enriched by accents and nuances particular to the character of each country. These days it is of the utmost importance to compare the various ways our artists have of putting across the complex developments of cultural traditions that remain alive, as unequivocal signs of their strength and of their resources.

Consequently, the third Bienal de La Habana is being planned under the theme of ‘Tradition and Contemporaneity’, thus calling the gathered artists to show the wide range of responses this remit suggests.

The Centro Wifredo Lam will select the artists to be invited from each of the areas, in collaboration with key figures, organisations and consulting bodies.

The third Bienal de La Habana will not be based on a principle of competition. Various ministries, bodies and national and international institutions will have the chance to acquire works, individually or in sets, and this will be appropriately reflected within the exhibition spaces and the related literature.

The third Bienal de La Habana will be made up of a group of exhibitions, creative workshops, symposia, discussions, seminars and interdisciplinary activities, all arranged in connection with the Bienal’s core theme. Artists and key figures from our regions as well as other parts of the world will participate in all of these events.
