On 11–13 April 2014 Afterall and Tate Film presented ‘“Magiciens de la Terre” Reconsidered’, a long weekend of screenings and discussions based on the Centre Pompidou’s original cinema programme for the ‘Magiciens’ exhibition, the subject of a recent book in our Exhibition Histories series.
The session held on Sunday 13, ‘Magiciens Reconsidered 5: Artists at Work, Filming Magicians’ explored the relationship between visual anthropology and experimental filmmaking trough the screening of Divine Horsemen: the Living Gods of Haiti (1985) by Maya Deren and Teji Ito, with Al Clah’s Al Clah Intrepid Shadows (1966–69), part of the series Navajos Film Themselves.
The screenings, introduced by George Clark, were accompanied by an illustrated talk by curator Anselm Franke, Head of Visual Arts and Film Department, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin.
