‘History is made by the people’: Fragments on the Museo Comunitario del Valle de Xico

Through a series of fragments, Pablo Lafuente and Michelle Sommer present a picture of the Museo Comunitario de Xico via histories of anti-colonial resistance, collectivity and the museum as a social tool. Surface level: The archaeological site of Xico, Xico Station, Old Xico, San Miguel Xico, Xico hill… The name Xico comes from Nahuatl Xictli, which means ‘centre’ or ‘belly button’, and from the suffix co that signifies location. Therefore, Xico could be translated as ‘in the belly button’. Its glyph, its pictogram, represents the Xico hill, seen from above, from the sky, with an umbilical cord that emerges from its centre.
